Akhila helped the team move to new role as Deregulation Unit by briefing areas of the department on the new government's Deregulation Agenda and its impact on the department. Following this, she was involved in investigating opportunities for deregulation in department, in particular, assisting the Higher Education Sector in identifying deregulation savings over a three year period. In this role, Akhila took an eight month career break to take up the opportunity as an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development with AusAID.

Akhila was based in the Philippines for eight months to assist a local non government organisation (NGO) with an agriculture project and upskill employees in project management. Akhila introduced a new workshop style which was well received; formulated the management structure for a livelihood project that empowered local women by placing them in managerial roles and expanded the scope of her original volunteer assignment to include fundraising activities. She assisted in setting up an in house fundraising unit, held fortnightly training sessions, began an organisation-wide change management process and performed a value chain analysis on vegetable production.

Akhila regularly engaged with internal stakeholders to investigate opportunities for business process re-engineering. She successfully delivered a project requiring the payment of contractors to be processed electronically. This project was funded after a comprehensive analysis of the comparative costs between manual and electronic processing were delivered. Akhila also identified efficiencies and cost improvements involved in introducing e invoicing to the department. Akhila delivered training modules for data capture software, Service Manager 9.3, in place following the amalgamation of 13 departmental help desks. She completed a brief secondment to the Commonwealth Rehabilitation Services (CRS) Australia integration project, which involved liaising with ICT, Communications, Procurement and Operations teams; providing regular stakeholder reports and maintaining a risks and issues register.
