About Dylan

I am a freelance technical author & UX writer with 20+ years of experience in mostly software documentation. My expertise is on the more technical side of the profession, such as API documentation, complex administration software, SAP, code descriptions, and so on. But I try to intersperse these projects with more user-focused documents, because this requires a different way of thinking. I am also a keen editor of documents and UX text.

I am very experienced with designing and writing user guides, online help, tutorials, training materials, troubleshooting guides. I have also consulted on user interface/experience content for many years. I am highly experienced with both developer-level and user-facing documentation.

I expect to learn new tools, but I will allow myself to boast that I am expert in Antora (this is the future), MS Office, DITA, Madcap Flare and FrameMaker (XML and standard). I am also fluent in Markdown, AsciiDoc, HTML, LaTex and Tex. And HPTag - if you know what that is, I'll buy you a beer.

My command of English is so precise that I have been asked to work on style guides, terminology DBs, and glossaries.

I have worked remotely for most of my career, but I love travelling to visit my clients too, when necessary, and I will even come onsite if the project is interesting enough!

    March 2025 - Today (1 year and 3 months)
For Aleph Alpha, I managed the documentation project for the full-stack, on-premise AI platform PhariaAI. The documentation audience was mixed: end-users, system administrators and developers. My role involved the following:

    - Migrate, restructure, and rewrite a large
documentation set from Docusaurus to Antora
    - Propose and manage new documentation tools and processes and manage the entire documentation project
    - Create and populate a terminology database
    - Work with product designers to improve UI text

I wrote the documentation for an API and web portal for a new healthcare platform called Healthanea. We published a Doc Portal using the excellent Antora (AsciiDoc source) with integrated Swagger UI pages. I also edited the UI text on the main product portal.

I wrote technical documentation for Amadeus Passenger Recovery, a sexy tool for airlines to reaccommodate billions of disturbed passengers in seconds. We used MadCap Flare to produce user guides and an online help system.
